His research topics included shipbuilding in North Carolina, maritime history, and Naval history in the American Civil War through World War II.
A collection of Lt. Richard Norman Tetlie's military service records (1943-1946) and the official records of the USS New York's lengthy service in the U.S. Navy (1914-1948). As an officer during World War II, Lt. Tetlie trained recruits at the Ship-to-Shore Division of the Fort Emory Detachment, Landing Craft School, Coronado, CA, in the fundamentals of the amphibious ship-to-shore maneuver. He then served as the USS New York's public relations officer and official historian (1946). As a result this collection contains documents, photographs, newsletters, and newspaper clippings from the USS New York during her service.

The bulk of the Raymond J. Kragness Papers (1943-1946, 2000, 2004) pertains to Mr. Kragness's service in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre in World War II aboard the USS Escambia. Personal items include rites of passage membership cards (such as crossing the Equator), draft board notification, photographs, post cards of San Francisco Bay, course certificates, separation from service records and a brief family history. The remaining items pertain to his service on the USS Escambia, a fleet oiler. Included are the ship's history and directory, newsletter "Eighty Times," a list of ships fuled by the USS Escambia, plans of the day, congratulatory messages from Admiral Halsey, and invitations and tickets for commissioning and decommissioning ceremonies.
Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. All three men were delegates of North Carolina at varying times between 1774-1777. The collection spans 1925-1926 and includes two photographic prints and two letter correspondence. The strength of the collection are the photographic prints of two of the three North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signers and biographical notes.
William Fillmore Papers
#1202Collection of scanned digital material documenting the life and career of Colonel William Haydock Fillmore (1893-1966), a pilot, barnstormer, and member of the United States Air Force. Included are 581 images related to early aviation (ca.1910-1960s), the Fillmore Flying Service in Oakland, California (ca.1925-1939), Fillmore's military career, family life, and his the farm named Chosumneda in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.

Hustvedt (USNA Class of 1909), discusses his thirty-six year career, including service in World War I and World War II, heading the Experimental Section in the Bureau of Ordnance, serving as Production Chief of the Naval Gun Factory, commanding the USS Detroit and the USS North Carolina, Commander of Battleships in the Atlantic Fleet, and commanding Battleship Division 7.
