Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County Records

The Phoenix Historical Society: African American History of Edgecombe County was founded in 2001 to recover, record, and promote the unique history of Edgecombe County (North Carolina) as experienced by members of its African American community. Edward Withers Harvey, Sr. and Jr. Collection

This collection contains five photographs. These photographs show the J. R. and J. G. Moye Store on Evans St. in Greenville in the 1910s, the Amoco Dealers conventions in Washington, D.C.,and the most recent photograph comes from the late 1980s or early 1990s of the Pitt County, N.C., Sheriff's Department and includes coroner E. W. Harvey, Jr.

USS United States Logbooks

Collection consists of a two volumes titled "Journal of a Cruise from Norfolk, Virginia to the Pacific Ocean in the United States Frigate United States, Isaac Hull, Esq'r, Commander" kept by Philadelphian midshipman Lawrence Penington from 4 December 1823, through 22 April 1827. United States was one of six frigates authorized to be constructed by the Naval Act of 1794 and it served as the flagship for Commodore Hull who was head of the American naval squadron on the Pacific Coast of South America. Penington documents navigation statistics, weather reports and daily ship life, along with the larger issues of interaction between the American naval squadron and British, Spanish, Chilean, Colombian and Peruvian naval and military counterparts.

The map was drawn by Lt. William S. Andrews of the 9th N.Y. Regiment and published by the authority of the Secretary of War, Office of the Chief of Engineers, U.S. Army.

John Gaston Rives, Jr. Family Papers

Robert Ryves (later Rives) is traces back to 1465 France. His family eventually settled in North Carolina in the mid 1700's. Robert Ryves descendant John Gaston Rives Jr was born on June 24, 1854 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. This collection spans 1818-1957, 2007 and contains three pages removed from the Rives family Bible, containing birth, death, and marriage records dating between 1818 and 1957, genealogy of the Rives family back to 1465 France, and a photograph of John Gaston Rives Jr. The strength of this collection is the genealogical records.

John Miller Faison Collection

A collection (ca. 1885-1918, undated) of 55 cartes de visite and cabinet cards mounted on cardboard, a scrapbook containing 11 snapshots, a manuscript, and printed materials belonging to John Miller Faison, a North Carolina physician, Democratic Party leader, and Congressman from the N.C. Third District between 1911 and 1915.

Steven Anthony Hill Collection

The majority of this collection pertains to James V. Lobell of Maryland who was a leader in the footwear industry from 1913 to 1961; he founded Cavalier Shoe Polish Company which was purchased by KIWI in 1961. Included are business and personal correspondence, photographs, reports, shoe catalogs, and bound issues of Shoes and Leather Reporter (1910s-1920s). Papers also reflect his involvement with the Boy Scouts, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary (especially during WWII), and Business Education among other topics. The donor wrote his master's thesis on Lobell's life and materials related to his research are included, too. Unrelated to Mr. Lobell are clippings (1969-1978) and posters concerning Rose High School (Greenville, North Carolina) football and baseball teams; a broadside "Chronology of Pitt County History" created by Jessamine Shumate (1953); and North Carolina public school education-related documents (1906-1933).
