Papers include daily and monthly reports; trial statements; criminal investigation procedures; policies; training publications and the quizzers that accompanies them; certificates; commendation; newspaper and article clippings; photographs; negatives; brochures; flyers; signs; correspondence: two sets of notes of screenplay research on Garland Bunting; Kopka's retirement speech; sketch; armband; and a roster that lists violators.

Joseph Hewes, William Hooper, and John Penn signed the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on July 4, 1776. All three men were delegates of North Carolina at varying times between 1774-1777. The collection spans 1925-1926 and includes two photographic prints and two letter correspondence. The strength of the collection are the photographic prints of two of the three North Carolina Declaration of Independence Signers and biographical notes.

Collection (1791-1896) consisting of photocopies of land deeds and tintypes pertaining to families in Carteret County, N.C.

This collection (1821-2007) contains several groups of family history-related papers concerning eastern North Carolina and a large number of unrelated miscellaneous items such as photographs, church records, Bible records, and rare printed items on a variety of subjects. The majority of the family papers concern the Croom and Whitfield families of Lenoir County, N.C. Other family papers concern the Harvey family of Greene County, N.C., the Jordan and Waters families of Washington, N.C., the Meeks family of Pitt County, the Outlaw family of Lenoir County and the Thompson family of Georgia. A large part of this collection concerns the Ficklen family of Greenville, N.C., including scrapbooks, diaries, an autograph book and a post card collection. Some items concern the colorful poet, magazine editor, railroad speculator, paper mill owner, Civil War blockade-runner, and sea captain Appleton Oaksmith who lived in Carteret County, N.C., for fifteen years (1872-1887). Also included are ambrotype photographs of Confederate Civil War soldiers James Needham Alexander, who served in Company A, 11th North Carolina Troops (Infantry) and Stanhope Washington Alexander, who served in Company H, 35th North Carolina Regiment.

Papers (1785-1930) including correspondence, land records, legal materials, financial records, and miscellaneous items.

Papers (1865-1954, undated) consisting of correspondence, speeches, financial and legal records, a minute book, a guest register, photographs, newspapers, genealogical notes, deeds, etc., related to the career of Dr. Charles O'Hagan Laughinghouse (1871-1930) of Greenville, N.C., and to the Laughinghouse and related Stokes families. Besides having a successful practice in Greenville, Dr. Laughinghouse was a respected member of the North Carolina State Board of Health for several years beginning in 1911, served as president of the Medical Society of the State of North Carolina in 1916 and 1917, and served as State Health Officer from 1926 until his death in 1930.

Papers of the Historic Halifax Garden Association include official documents (1975-1999) such as the constitution and by-laws, papers regarding tax-exempt status and a photocopy of the check handing over the remaining assets of the association to the Historical Halifax Restoration Association; two secretarial notebooks (1981-1989); a guestbook used at the opening of the Restored Eagle Tavern in Historic Halifax (June 29, 1981) and records belonging to past president Gwen B. Dickens (1975, 1979-1989) such as orders of business, attendance records, membership dues records, correspondence and material related to projects.

The John Joyner May Family Papers document the personal and financial activities of John Joyner May and his family in eastern North Carolina from 1868 to 1930. The collection consists of correspondence, receipts, invoices, legal documents, and printed materials that reflect local commerce, credit relationships, and family life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Notable items include a chattel mortgage agreement, a post Civil War bankruptcy discharge, business correspondence with regional merchants, and ephemera related to insurance and local publications. The materials provide insight into rural economic practices and community networks in Pitt County and the surrounding region.

Papers (1908 – 1986, undated [bulk: 1964 – 1986]) of John Porter East, including biographical, genealogical, and historical materials relating to his life (b. 5 May 1931 – 29 June 1986) ; his marriage to Priscilla Sherk East and their children; his service as an officer in the U. S. Marine Corps; his battle against poliomyelitis and the paralysis it caused; his graduate studies in political science and as a professor of Political Science at East Carolina University, 1964 – 1980, including his teaching files for each of his classes, his academic and professional publications, speeches, interviews; and also his conservative Republican political beliefs and affiliations and political career, including his several unsuccessful attempts to win political office in North Carolina, 1966 – 1976, culminating in his successful campaign for and election to the United States Senate in 1980; but the bulk of the collection focuses on his service in the Senate, where he was aligned with Senator Jesse Helms (R-NC) and a member of Helms' political organization, the Congressional Club; including his mailing lists, correspondence and constituent cases and projects files; his office and staff files, including files of this administrative assistants, press secretaries and legislative assistants; his political patronage and nomination files, committee and legislative activities; his voting records, newsletters, voluminous clipping files, press and public relations files, including publications, audio and video of interviews, speeches, and political events; his frequent bouts of ill health due to poliomyelitis, hyperthyroidism, urinary tract blockages, and depression, and their side effects which may have contributed to his death by suicide; also including photographic prints and negatives, microfilm of committee records, correspondence, case and general files, voter registration files; and also oversized materials, 1981 – 1986, undated.

Collection does not contain original photographs Collection, ca. 1908-1997, of photographic prints made from cyanotype, sepia tone, and black & white photographs. Original photographs were owned by Alpheus W. Drinkwater (1875-1962), a telegrapher and correspondent for The Associate Press in Manteo, NC, who was famed for relaying the news of the Wright Brothers's first flight at Kitty Hawk, NC, on December 17, 1903.

A collection including a logbook (9/11/1854-7/11/1863) for the ship Trafalgar, a packet ship with the City of Dublin Line, written by Captain Alfred William Harrison during its many voyages primarily between London, England and Madras, India, and other ports of call, a handwritten letter, a Mariner's Register Ticket, and other papers describing his voyages and medical illnesses, and a carte de visite of Capt. Harrison.
