A collection including a logbook (9/11/1854-7/11/1863) for the ship Trafalgar, a packet ship with the City of Dublin Line, written by Captain Alfred William Harrison during its many voyages primarily between London, England and Madras, India, and other ports of call, a handwritten letter, a Mariner's Register Ticket, and other papers describing his voyages and medical illnesses, and a carte de visite of Capt. Harrison.
This log book contains daily entries from October 29, 1816, through November 29, 1818, for the Schooner Hilan. John Hand is the Master of the schooner which sailed between eastern seaboard ports Philadelphia, Norfolk, Richmond, and Charleston. Entries cover weather, cargo listings, upkeep of the schooner, issues with crew members and passengers, and problems with the schooner related to harsh weather.
Papers (1830-2014, undated) [Bulk: 1895-1970] of the Humber Family, documenting the lives of Robert Lee Humber, Jr. (1898-1970) and his extended family, including the papers of his father, Robert Lee Humber, Sr. (1864-1952), a businessman and inventor and his mother, Lena Clyde Davis Humber (1870-1936) and her family, of Kinston, Greenville and Davis Island, North Carolina; his siblings, John Davis Humber, MD (1895-1991), Leslie Mumford Humber (1907-1925), and Lena Dye Humber Smith (1902-1973); also including his wife, Lucie Julie Jeanne Berthier Humber (1895-1982) and the Berthier family of Villeneuve and Paris, France, and their children and grandchildren, families, educations, careers, activities, and writings; including correspondence, files, ephemera, museum objects, published materials and oversized materials, arranged generally in alphabetical order by the donors.
Collection (1916-1918) includes 14 silver gelatin photographs and 4 printed postcards that belonged to Emil Görling, a German soldier in the 3rd Landwehr Division during World War I. The majority of the images document the 1918 German Spring Offensive in Northern France, specifically the Noyon campaign (April-August 1918). Included are images of the devastation in the area, the battlefields between the towns of Noyon and Lassigny in France, and the unit at work, at leisure and in retreat in the Lorraine area. Many of the photographs and postcards have comments written with pencil or ink in German.
Included are a Brake Family History; a survey (1984) and history of the Brake Family Cemetery located near the corner of Cokey Road and Calhoun Road in Rocky Mount, North Carolina; a deed and a marriage license; genealogy information; Brake, Burges and Fly family photographs; documents (1957-1980) related to the West Edgecombe Volunteer Fire Department which included volunteer firefighter Robert Earl Brake; tobacco sale bills (1926-1933, undated) from several warehouses in Rocky Mount; and a 1931-1932 Faculty and Student Directory for N.C. This collection contains the records (1872-2014, undated) for the Cumberland Lodge No. 5, Knights of Pythias, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Types of material included are correspondence, financial records, rosters, visitors' registers, by-laws, deeds, records of proceedings and printed material. Membership information often gives a member's age, dates when each class or rank was attained, date of death and what dues were collected. In some cases indication is also given as to when membership was withdrawn, suspended or reinstated.
Donald Read Eglee Papers relating to his service in the United States Navy and Naval Reserve, 1943-1984, including correspondence, notes, photographs, official service records, printed materials, etc.
Collection (ca. 1936-1997) relates to the life and career of Arthur Greenville McIntyre; an Lieutenant Commander of the United States Navy who was a U.S. Naval Academy graduate (Class of 1941) and who served in the Pacific theater of World War II. McIntyre served on the submarine U.S.S. Grenadier until it was lost in April 1943 by Japanese bombing. As a result of the attack, he became a prisoner of war of the Japanese and was not released until September of 1945. The bulk of the collection is on McIntyre's naval career but there is also material containing his biographical information and information on his time as a prisoner of war. Of particular interest are documents that have information on the Japanese who ran the POW camps and who were tried in the war crimes trials that were held in Japan. The documents lists their names and the sentences they received as a result of those trials. The majority of the documents in the collection are in English but some are in Japanese and Spanish with no translation.
Papers of U.S. Navy enlisted man (1863-1864) aboard the US sloop of War Powhatan, including a private log book (Nov. 1863 - Aug. 1864), correspondence, a manuscript entitled " The Attack on Charleston," and a daguerreotype of a Civil War sailor (presumably Thomas).
