Alex Albright Collection

Collection contains mainly material related to the African American Navy Band members who served at the Great Lakes Naval Base during World War II (1942-1945). This material includes programs and related material from the February 28-March 2, 2003, salute to these African American band members that was held in Chicago, Illinois, and from former band member Carl Foster's participation in a symposium sponsored by the North Carolina Museum of History in 2003. Other material includes programs (1987) for concerts by the North Carolina Jazz Ensemble and a 1945 USO Hawaii booklet.

Edward Baxter Billingsley Papers

The Edward Baxter Billingsley Collection (1817-1819, 1938–1999, undated) consists of historical research materials, drafts, and a typescript copy (643 pages) of One Destroyer and World War II: A History of the U. S. S. Emmons (DD457-DM22), by Edward Baxter Billingsley, that he later published as The Emmons Saga: A History of the U. S. S. Emmons (DD457 – DM22). Also included are photographic prints, photocopied naval documents, and microfilm reels concerning his research, and correspondence (1817-1819) related to his dissertation on Chilean and Peruvian wars of Independence.

William Fillmore Papers

Collection consists of a DVD containing 581 images of photographs and documents related to the life of William Haydock Fillmore (1893-1966) who married into the Carr family of Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He founded and operated the Fillmore Flying Service in Oakland, California, in the late 1920s through the 1930s, was a barnstormer, a commanding officer in the Army Air Corps during World Wars I and II and the Korean War, and retired to a farm named Chosumneda in Edgecombe County. Betty Bonner Higgins Collection

Collection contains a scrapbook (1943-1945) related to Betty Bonner Higgins' World War II service in W.A.V.E.S (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service). Included is an assortment of photographs of her family, of herself and her fellow W.A.V.E.S. during training at Indiana University, and of her boyfriend aboard the USS Admiralty Islands and soldiers in the Pacific Theater. Assorted military notices, newspaper clippings, ephemera, personal correspondence, and two pamphlets describing service in the W.A.V.E.S. are also in the scrapbook.
