Papers of ECU professor Dr. Richard C. Todd containing awards for his service at ECU, information about the establishment of the Richard and Clauda Todd endowment, postcards, and materials from his alma mater Millersville State Teachers College.


Biographical/historical information

Dr. Richard Cecil Todd was born December 29, 1914 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Millersville State Teachers College in 1938. In 1941 he received a Master of Education degree in History from Pennsylvania State University. He obtained his Ph. D. in History from Duke University in 1950 and that same year joined the History Department at ECU as an Associate Professor of History. His areas of expertise were the American Revolution and the US Civil War. Dr. Todd was a member of the Phi Sigma Pi National Honor Society in chapters at Millersville State Teachers College and East Carolina. At East Carolina he served as the chapter's Faculty Advisor from his appointment in 1950 until his retirement in 1977. In addition, he also served in various roles in Phi Sigma Pi including as the National President between 1957 and 1959. Dr. Todd served as the Director and Chairman of the ECU History Honors Program, as well as the Chairman of the ECU Scholarship and Student Financial Aid Committee. After his retirement from ECU in 1977 he was named Faculty Emeritus and was also inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society that same year. He and his wife Clauda Pennock Todd helped establish several scholarships and endowments. This included the Richard C. Todd and Clauda Pennock Todd East Carolina University Endowment in 1984. Todd Dining Hall, opened in 1994, is named in honor of Dr. Todd. He passed away July 18, 1993.


Scope and arrangement

This collection contains Dr. Richard C. Todd's awards for his service at ECU including certificates and plaques, newspaper clippings and a brochure with information about the establishment of the Richard and Clauda Todd endowment, commencement materials and yearbooks from Dr. Todd's alma mater Millersville State Teachers College in Millersville, Pennsylvania, and postcards to Betty-Blaine Worthington.
