This collection contains draft articles written by James Batten for In Restrospect, a history of the namesakes of the buildings on ECU's campus, as well as a published version of In Retrospect.
James William Batten was born on August 5, 1919 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Batten completed his bachelor's degree at the University of North Carolina in 1940, and then taught chemistry, biology, and math at Glendale High School in Kenly, NC. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He remained a part of the Naval Reserve until 1966. Batten resumed teaching in 1946 at Wilmington College (1946-1947) and Princeton High School (1947-1950). He later served as principal of Micro High School in Micro, NC from 1950 to 1958. He obtained his masters degree in Education in 1957. In 1958, he was awarded a teaching fellowship at UNC-Chapel Hill and in 1959 worked as the presenter at the Morehead Planetarium. In 1960, he completed an Doctorate of Education in earth science and was hired as an assistant professor of education at East Carolina. He was later promoted to full professor. He served as chair of the Department of Secondary Education and then as assistant dean of the College of Education. At his retirement in 1986 he was awarded Faculty Emeritus. In 1990, he was awarded status as an honorary alumnus of ECU. He published a number of books including In Restrospect which detailed the history of the namesakes of the buildings at ECU. In 1993, a conference room in Speight Building was dedicated in his honor. He died on December 10, 2004 in Greenville, NC.
