Collection contains correspondence and research notes of East Carolina history professor Mary Jo Bratton, particularly materials pertaining to her history of the university.
Mary Jo Bratton, born July 18, 1926, was the former director of graduate studies for the Department of History at East Carolina University. Bratton received her Ph.D in U.S. History from UNC-Chapel Hill before beginning her teaching career at ECU. With a career spanning nearly thirty years, Bratton was the recipient of many grants and awards related to her articles and papers focusing on Southern History. She was appointed as the school's first university historian when she was commissioned by ECU to write "East Carolina University: The Formative Years 1907-1982" for the school's 75th anniversary. As a result, Bratton won the Willie Parker Peace History Book award, given annually by the North Carolina Society of Historians to recognize NC writers who have published a book about a county, individual, or institution. Bratton continued writing smaller works as she served as the acting chair of the history department before easing into retirement in 1995.
