East Carolina Teacher's Training School opened in 1909 as a teacher's training school for both white women and men, although very few men began enrolling until the 1930s. In 1922 the school was renamed East Carolina Teacher's College and then again to East Carolina College in 1951 when it became a four year institution. In 1967 it gained university status in the University of North Carolina System.

Collection contains two bricks taken from the Old Austin Building after its destruction in 1968. The Jenkins Fine Arts Center now stands on the site of the Old Austin Building. Among the first buildings on campus, the Old Austin Building housed classrooms, offices, and the library. The building underwent two major expansions. The first occured in 1914 when the East Wing was added to accomadate the growing student body. In 1922, the West Wing expansion included more classrooms, an alumni center, and a gymnasium.
