The Greek chapters at East Carolina University are governed by one of four councils: National Panhellenic Council (sororities), Multicultural Greek Council (MGC), Interfraternity Council (fraternities), and the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Although each of the organizations may be unique, the main missions are the same and include scholarship, phianthrophy/service, leadership and friendship. There are conflicting stories as to the origins of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, but it is generally accepted that Lambda Chi Alpha minutes were first recorded in 1910. The Iota Upsilon Chapter was later established at East Carolina College.
