Scope and arrangement

The 'Sea Venture' flagship of the Virginia Company, carrying Sir George Somers and an English crew, was wrecked off Bermuda or the Somers [Summers] Islands (1609). The survivors then divided the island among themselves. The map shows the island's position relative to the Roanoke Colony and New England. Hondius based the map on Richard Norwood's survey of 1622, published by John Speed (1627).
