Seven engravings of University of Pennsylvania medical school faculty.


Biographical/historical information

The medical school at the University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1765, making it the oldest medical school in the United States.

Joseph Carson was born 1808 April 19 to Joseph and Elizabeth (Lawrence) Carson. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1830. In his early career, Carson focused on obstetrics and materia medica, but then decided to focus primarily on materia medica. He worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1844 to 1848 and 1850 until his death in 1876.

Hugh Lenox Hodge was born 1796 June 27 to Hugh and Maria (Blanchard) Hodge. He married margaret E. Aspinwall and they had seven children. Hodge worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1823 to 1863. During that time, failing eyesight forced him to shift from surgery to obstetrics. He died 1873 February 23.

Joseph Leidy was born 1823 September 9 to Philip and Catherine (Mellick) Leidy. He married Anna Harden in 1864, and died 1891 April 30. He worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1853 to 1891, focusing on microscopy.

George Bacon Wood was born 1797 March 13 to Richard and Elizabeth (Bacon) Wood; he married Caroline Hahn. Wood worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1835 to 1860, and then served as a trustee from 1863 until his death 1879 March 30.

Samuel Jackson was born 1787 March 22 to David and Susan (Kemper) Jackson, and died 1872 April 4. He worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1835 to 1863.

William Gibson was born 1788 March 14 and died 1868 March 2. He married first Sarah Charlotte Hollingsworth and had five children, and married second [unknown] and had three children. He worked at the University of Pennsylvania from 1819 to 1855.
