Josephine E. Newell, daughter of family physician Hodge Newell, was born on 1925 May 20 in Franklin County, North Carolina. She graduated with a degree in chemical engineering from the University of South Carolina and earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland. From 1951 to 1975, Newell practiced family medicine in Bailey, North Carolina, and then went on to head private and state healthcare projects. She became the first female President of the North Carolina Medical Society in 1981, later served as President of the Organization of State Medical Association Presidents, and held offices in the Wilson County Medical Society. Newell was instrumental in founding the Country Doctor Museum in Bailey, North Carolina, in 1967 and was President of the Board of Directors from 1967-1987. She died on 2014 July 9 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Josephine E. Newll Papers consist of correspondence, research on a murder case, North Carolina Medical Society presidential address and gavel, playbill and study guide, curriculum vitae, photographs, and newspaper articles. Also included are two tin signs and an undated line drawing of country doctor art designed for advertisement of the Anheuser-Busch product, Malt Nutrine.

The two tins "Dr. Stork" and "A Hurry Call" were donated by Josephine E. Newell in 1995.
