In this oral history Debra Newby talks about her childhood as well as her experience being one of the students who filed a Title IX grievance against East Carolina University in 1978 and how that impacted the rest of her life.


Biographical/historical information

Debra Ann Newby was born in Columbus, Ohio to military parents. After her parents' divorce when she was nine, she and her four siblings were raised by her single mother in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Newby attended East Carolina University from 1975-1979 where she was a member of the women's basketball team and majored in English. Along with four other students, Newby filed a Title IX grievance with the univeristy in 1978 focused on equitability issues in the university's sports programs. After graduation Newby attended law school at Oklahoma City University and has practiced law ever since.
