This collection of Tom Shields' records contains correspondence, administrative files from East Carolina University's Roanoke Colonies Research Office, his publications, event announcements and brochures, press releases, photographs, audio cassettes, and digital media on floppy and zip disks.


Biographical/historical information

Tom Shields earned a B.A. at Bucknell University, an M.A. at Western Kentucky University, and a Ph.D. at University of Tennessee. At East Carolina University he taught undergraduate and graduate courses on American literature, especially early American and frontier literature, undergraduate literary survey and composition courses, and graduate research methods. His research interests and publications focus on the Spanish and English literature of colonial North America, particularly the "Lost Colony" and John Lawson. He helped establish the Roanoke Colonies Research Office at ECU in 1993. He retired from East Carolina University in the summer of 2022.
