On May 20, 1938, Stanley R. Riggs was born in Watertown, Wisconsin. With a lifelong passion in geology and marine biology, Riggs pursued and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Beloit College, Master of Art at Dartmouth College, and Ph.D. at the University of Montana. Not long after, Riggs joined ECU's faculty in 1967 as an Assistant Professor of Geology, with specific interests in marine geology and stratigraphy. Riggs conducted research in earth resources and coastal processes along the coastal Carolinas and on every continent except Africa and Antartica. In 1983, he won East Carolina's O. Max Gardner Award, an award recognizing his contributions to the welfare of the human race, because of his work on a United Nations project involving resource utilization in developing countries. In 1989 he was named a Geological Society of America Fellow and awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Senior Research Fellowship in Marine Science. In 1994, he won East Carolina's College of Arts and Sciences Distinguished Professor award. During his time at East Carolina, he organized an international workshop that brought 150 professionals from 40 countries to ECU.
