Biographical/historical information
Gregory William Paul Kosteck was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on September 2, 1937. He earned a Bachelor's degree in music theory and composition from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1959 followed by a Masters degree from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor in 1961 and a PhD there in 1964. He won numerous national and international awards for his scholarship and musical compositions both during his time as a student and as a professor, including a Fulbright Fellowship for post-doctoral study in the Netherlands, the Wienawski International Composers' Competition in 1981, and the Harvey Gaul Opera Prize in 1977. He taught at Washington and Jefferson College before teaching at East Carolina from 1966 to 1973. After leaving East Carolina, he taught at Appalachian State University, Columbia University in New York City, and the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. He died in Sarasota, Florida on December 27, 1991.
