Biographical/historical information

Timothy Runyan was born August 9th, 1941 in Gary, Indiana. He received his undergraduate degree from Capital University in 1963 and Master's and Ph.D. from University of Maryland in 1965 and 1971 respectively. He served as Director of the graduate program in Maritime History at East Carolina University between 1997 and 2004. Between 2007 and 2011, he worked as manager of the Maritime Heritage Program at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), working to preserve and support historic sites and museums across the country to educate Americans on their maritime history. Runyan's was a founder of the Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland and was chair of the National Maritime Alliance. For his contributions to the North American Society for Oceanic History, he was awarded the K. Jack Bauer award. In addition, Runyan published multiple scholarly articles and books. He retired from ECU in 2018 with Professor Emeritus. He died on January 8, 2025.
