This collection contains Mary Stephenson Hammel's items from her time as a student at East Carolina which are her diploma, publication award for her work on the yearbook, and letter patch for her participation in the Women's Athletic Association. Additionally, there is a 2005 photograph of Mary and a copy of the Alumni Association's booklet made for the class of 1955's Golden Alumni event.
Mary Augustine Stephenson Hammel was born March 18, 1933 in Como, North Carolina to E. Frank Stephenson, Sr. and Lucye Stephenson. She passed away April 9, 2022 in Norfolk, Virginia. Mary 1951 graduate of Murfreesboro High School and 1955 graduate of East Carolina University. Mary taught public school in Norfolk and Chesapeake for 30 years. She was a member of and volunteer for many organizations including Meals on Wheels, Chesapeake Master Gardeners, Order of the Eastern Star, and Great Bridge Presybyterian Church.
