Biographical/historical information

The Beta Phi chapter of Pi Kappa Phi was established at ECC in February 1961 by Wayne Scott at the request of Pi Kappa Phi Executive Director Durwood Owen. Scott was given a scholarship for graduate school at ECC on the condition that he help establish a new chapter on campus. Scott, with the assistance of Pi Kappa Phi's traveling counselor Jim Lloyd, began recruiting with an emphasis on quality candidates rather than large quantites of men to fill their ranks. The first initiation of eligible pledges took place in May 1961, featuring the original cohort of Kappa Phi brothers: Chester Boone, Dan Ray, Phil Nancy, Tommy Hicks, Bobby Hood, and Wiley Lewis. The group began meeting in the original chapter room, on the second floor of Beddingfield's Drug Store, before moving to'The Niche' above Diener's Bakery and Ken's Furniture on Dickinson Avenue. The group eventually took up residency in the first fraternity house on East 5th Street, purchased with the help of professor A.B. Stallworth, who also served as an advisor to the group. In 1970, the fraternity purchased a house at 803 Hooker Road, which served as primary home over the next decade. By the end of the 1970's, Beta Phi was facing severe financial and leadership instability. After a series of meetings with alumni and interested parties throughout the state, the Beta Phi Alumni Chapter was established in 1981. The Alumni Chapter has continued to be a supporting body for younger members, able to fundraise and procure necessary resources to help Beta Phi address their various housing and administrative needs.
