Scope and arrangement

Captain Wyse, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., was a member of the US Naval Academy Class of 1941. After graduation from the academy, he was sent to the USS NEW MEXICO where he became assistant navigator. During the summer and fall of 1941 he saw service in Iceland before transferring to submarine school. His next assignments were aboard the submarine cargo ship BASS and the SS 318, BAYA.

Interview #2 covers war-time duty in the USS BAYA (1943-1945) and post war service in the USS STURGEON, USS DOGFISH, USS SPIKEFISH, USS QUILBACK, USS COGSWELL, AND USS TELFAIR. Commentary reflects duty with the Chief of Naval Operations— Underwater Acoustics Branch, service in Turkey as Operations and Plans Officer for Black Sea Area, assignment to Submarine Division 32 in San Diego, and responsibilities as chief of staff to RAdm R. Y. McElroy in Key West, Florida (1960-1962).
