Scope and arrangement
Born on September 1, 1898, in Mooresville, N.C., Miss Bost moved with her family to Cornelius, N.C., in 1916, where she later retired. Miss Bost served as a missionary to China under the Methodist Board of Missions between 1925 and 1943. She taught at a school in Soochow, China. In December, 1943, Miss Bost was repatriated as an exchange prisoner from a Japanese concentration camp. She returned to Japan as a missionary in 1949 and remained there until her retirement in 1969.
The collection consists of a diary written by Miss Bost enroute to China between August 20 and September 12, 1925, Miss Bost writes the diary on her first voyage to China aboard the ship EMPRESS OF RUSSIA of the Canadian Pacific Line. She begins her voyage in Vancouver, British Columbia, and concludes it in Soochow, China. The diary describes her experiences aboard ship, conditions on the ship, other persons traveling to Japan and China, and her sightseeing activities in the Japanese and Chinese ports, including Tokyo (Sept. 2), in which they docked. Miss Bost concludes her diary after listing several of the teachers at the school in Soochow, China, where she will be teaching.
