Biographical/historical information
Paul Mahan Cummings Jr. was born on 1924 February 3 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Paul Mahan Cummings and Helen L. Cummings. Cummings enlisted in the U.S. army during World War II and served from 1943 March 3 to 1945 December 10. He attended the University of Pittsburgh, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Premed in 1949 and his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1953. He also studied Periodontology at the University of Alabama, receiving a Master of Science in this field in 1958. He served as the director of periodontia at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry from 1957-1964 before opening a private practice in Winston Salem, North Carolina. From 1971 to 1989, Dr. Cummings operated a private practice as a periodontist in Wilmington, North Carolina. Cummings died on 1992 April 7 in Treasure Island, Pinellas, Florida and was buried in Harnett County, North Carolina.
Scope and arrangement
Articles collected by or sent to and papers written and delivered by Paul M. Cummings Jr. at conferences about periodontal disease. Dental slides from his years in Periodontics School are also included. Cummings was a supporter of the "Keyes Method" to help prevent periodontitis.
