The College of Allied Health Sciences was created in response to the growing need for allied health professionals and healthcare services in eastern North Carolina and the state. It was the first and only college of allied health sciences in North Carolina and the first to offer a doctoral program. In 1967, the North Carolina legislature authorized East Carolina University to establish a Life Sciences and Community Health Institute. A year later this institute became a professional school and was re-named the School of Allied Health Professions and Medical Education Center. In October 2007, it changed its name from School of Allied Health Sciences to the College of Allied Health Sciences.
