  • Biographical / Historical Note
     

    Henry Bascom Shields was born 25 March 1853 to John Wesley and Martha A. (Stutts) Shields. He attended Atlanta Medical College (now Emory University) in the 1870s, earning his medical degree. Shields practiced medicine in Moore County, North Carolina, for 45 years. He performed the first appendicitis operation in the county and was known for his work with typhoid fever. At the age of 73, he retired from practice, but acquired a controlling interest in the Shields Drug Company in Carthage. Shields married Flora Hartsell and they had a daughter, Katharine (Shields) Melvin. He died 15 April 1938.
