    Collection contains receipts from Nowell’s Drug Store in Wendell, North Carolina. The receipts are from ordering medicinal and general supplies between 1915 and 1937.

  • Biographical / Historical Note
     

    Nowell’s Drug Store was owned and operated by William Robert Nowell and his son William Jr. beginning about 1915. It was located on South Main Street in downtown Wendell, North Carolina. The six-bay front facade faced the Third and Main Street intersection. The store was a local landmark as one of the town's early drugstores and the building also housed a dental office, a physician's office, and had a beauty parlor upstairs.     William Robert Nowell was born 14 September 1886 to Riley Powell and Martha Ann (Todd) Nowell. He married his first wife, Lizzie Richardson, in 1911 and had Kathleen, Elizabeth, and William Jr. In 1920, Lizzie died when a flu epidemic hit Wendell. He married his second wife, Cora L. Chaplin, in 1926 and had Albert. Nowell died 9 April 1956.

    William Robert Nowell Jr. was born 16 January 1918 to William and Lizzie (Richardson) Nowell. He attended Smithdeal-Massey Business College in Richmond, Virginia and graduated in 1942 from the University of North Carolina School of Pharmacy. Nowell married Ruth Brantley and they had William Robert III, James David, Ruth Anne (Lacefield), and Lee Anthony. Nowell died 14 October 1967.
