Photograph of Miss Annie Morris, the first nursing director at Moore-Herring Hospital.
Biographical/historical information
Annie Morris was one of three in the first graduating class of nurses from Wilson Sanatorium in 1899. When Dr. C. E. Moore left the Wilson Sanatorium, he and Dr. B. S. Herring established the Moore-Herring Hospital in 1913. Annie Morris served as the first Superintendent of Nurses and continued to work there until 1926. "Miss Annie," as she was affectionately known, upheld precept and served as an example of very high standards for the students. In addition to being Superintendent of Nurses, she also served as anesthetist, operating room supervisor, politician, housekeeper, purchasing agent, and night supervisor. She was on call 24 hours and did not find time for a vacation. In 1926, Morris resigned as Superintendent of Nurses to become head of the infirmary at the East Carolina Teachers' College in Greenville, North Carolina.
