Biographical/historical information

James Meigs Flippin was born 1863 December 29 near Westfield, North Carolina, to Samuel and Ruth (Dearmin) Flippin. He went to grammar school and high school at Dalton's Academy from 1875 to 1880 and apprenticed for a year with Dr. Ed Hollingsworth of Mt. Airy, North Carolina, before attending medical school. Flippin graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Baltimore in 1884 at the age of 20. In 1887, he went to the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and took a post graduate medical course. He practiced in Hickory, Mt. Airy, and Pilot Mountain, all in North Carolina. Flippin's first marriage was to Cora L. Marion and they had Ruth, Mary, Merge, Euge, and James. His second wife was Ida Mae Boyd and they had Ida and Gloria. Flippin died 1961 January 11 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
