Biographical/historical information

Hugh Reid Scott was born in Rockingham County on 1855 January 9 to William and Rhonda Reid Scott. His father was a planter and merchant and a member of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions, while his mother was the sister of Governor David S. Reid. Hugh Reid Scott graduated from Wake Forest College in 1875 and then studied law under Chief Justice Richmond Pearson and received a license to practice law in 1877. Scott established a practice in Wentworth and later in Reidsville, North Carolina. In 1895, he was chosen to organize the Citizens' Bank of Reidsville. In 1908 at the age of fifty-three, Scott married Flossie Brewer and they had one child, Cecilia (Mrs. William Hester) Reid Scott. He returned to practicing law full time in 1909, served as legal counsel to businesses and businessmen, and held interests in property and farming. He died at the age of 92 on 1947 November 2.

Scope and arrangement

This collection includes a photograph depicting an infant and a toddler with her doll, one of whom is Cecilia Reid Scott. There is also a pamphlet itinerary for an Early Mediterranean Tour from 1909 that belonged to Hugh Reid Scott.
