Photographs of medical school cadaver laboratories.
In the eighteenth century, medical education shifted from students viewing their professor dissecting bodies to dissecting bodies themselves. By doing so, medical students learned more about anatomy and the experience helped them come to terms with death. When photography came along in 1839, medical students and professors could document their work, resulting in cadaver laboratory photograph.
The collection contains two cadaver laboratory photographs. One is a photograph from the Medical College of Virginia, dated 1917 March 20 and the other is a photograph from Vanderbilt University, dated 1918 April 20. Both photographs belonged to and feature Dr. Claude A. Adams Jr.
