George Ammie McLemore Sr. was born in Sampson County, North Carolina on 1878 November 12 to David and Margaret (Hall) McLemore. He graduated from the Medical Department of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh in 1906. After graduating, he went into practice in Johnston County, near Clayton until 1923, when he moved to Smithfield. In Smithfield, McLemore practiced medicine and superintended the management of farms, town property, and a drug store. He married Nellie E. Johnson in 1908, and they had five children: Annie Lucille (Austin), Margaret Elizabeth (Lee), Mina Eloise (Grady), George Ammie Jr., and Robert Alderman. Nellie died in April 1934, and he would marry second Geneva Godwin Rowland in 1953. He died 1961 April 14 in North Carolina.
George Ammie McLemore Jr. was born 1925 July 4 in Smithfield, North Carolina to George Ammie McLemore Sr. and Margaret Hall. He graduated from Smithfield High School in 1942. In 1946, McLemore earned a certificate in medicine from the University of North Carolina and his medical degree from Harvard University two years later. He did his residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He served in the Medical Corps of the United States Army from 1951 to 1953. For 55 years, McLemore practiced medicine in New York City. He specialized in internal medicine and cardiology, but was known as New York's "country doctor" because he made house calls. During his career, McLemore was an assistant attending physician at the New York Hospital, attending physician at Doctors' Hospital, and assistant physician in cardiopulmonary service at Memorial Hospital. He was also assistant clinical professor of medicine at Cornell Medical College. McLemore married Elizabeth Huffer Reinecke in 1959 and had one daughter, Elizabeth Johnson. McLemore died 2003 July 13 in New York City.

In the 1950s, McLemore Sr. produced a booklet, "Thoughts of a Country Doctor," which includes photographs of himself and stories about his father's experience of Sherman's March during the Civil War, why he chose to study and practice medicine, and being honored by the North Carolina Medical Society. The booklet also contains toasts, poetry, and witticisms written by McLemore.
