Biographical/historical information
Greenbury Crisfield Beeks was born 1809 November 17 in Virginia to James and Cornelia (Christfield) Beeks. He married Cornelia Crane Stagg.
Between 1847 and 1850 he attended the University of Louisville, Medical Department, in Kentucky, and Indiana Central Medical College in Indianapolis for two years each. In 1871 Beeks received an ad eundem medical degree from the University of Louisville, Medical Department, in Kentucky. Beeks was an itinerant preacher in the Methodist Episcopal Church; a member of the Board of Health in New Albany, Indiana; a Master Mason; a chaplain and surgeon for the Indiana Volunteers during the Civil War; and a dentist. Beeks died 1878 October 23 in Maitland, Florida.
Scope and arrangement
The papers of Greenbury Crisfield Beeks contain correspondence, student documents from the University of Louisville Medical Department, and matriculation cards from Indiana Central Medical College. Also included is a handwritten book belonging to Greenbury Crisfield Beeks with plants used in drugs and drug preparation recipes at one end of the book, while the other end includes Bible texts preached followed by a list of boarders and monies paid. A 1973 biography of Greenbury Crisfield Beeks by James B. Lounsbury completes the collection.
