Photograph of baseball player Walter Fenner "Buck" Leonard, who played in the African-American baseball league.
Biographical/historical information
Walter Fenner Leonard was born on September 8, 1907 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, where his father worked for the railroad. "Buck" made his African-American League debut for the Brooklyn Royal Giants in 1933, but he played from 1934 through 1950 for the Homestead Grays. He then played for five years in Mexico before returning to his native Rocky Mount, where he worked as a truant officer and physical education instructor. During his career in the African-American leagues, he was a World Series champion three times and chosen as a All-star Player for eleven different seasons. Though he never played in the Major Leagues, Buck was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972 and named in 1999 number 47 on the list of 100 greatest baseball players by The Sporting Times.
Buck Leonard suffered a stroke late in life and his autograph on this image displays some difficulty with writing. The image was signed between 1994 and Buck's death in 1997.
