Biographical/historical information

The city of Greenville, located in Pitt County, developed from a small river town into a regional center for commerce, education, and health care in eastern North Carolina. Established in 1771 as "Martinsborough" and later renamed Greenville in 1786, the community's early growth was closely tied to its position along the Tar River, which facilitated the transportation of agricultural products, particularly tobacco, cotton, and naval stores, to broader markets.

During the nineteenth century, Greenville functioned as a local trade and distribution hub serving the surrounding rural and agricultural areas. The expansion of railroads in the mid to late nineteenth century further integrated the town into regional and national economic networks, contributing to modest population growth and increased commercial activity. Tobacco emerged as a dominant economic force in Pitt County, shaping both the built environment and the labor structure of the region.

In the twentieth century, Greenville underwent significant transformation with the establishment and expansion of educational and medical institutions. The founding of East Carolina Teachers Training School in 1907, now East Carolina University, marked a pivotal moment in the city's development, contributing to population growth and diversifying the local economy beyond agriculture. The later development of medical facilities, including what is now ECU Health Medical Center, further established Greenville as a regional service center.
