The John T. Windley Collection contains correspondence and oversize materials dating from 1900 to 1919. The bulk of the collection consists of letters organized chronologically between 1905 and 1919, documenting personal and professional activities during the early twentieth century. The collection also includes a small number of oversize items, including a 1906 mercantile agency notification sheet and several land plats depicting farms, drainage districts, and tracts of land in eastern North Carolina. Together, these materials provide insight into regional economic activity, land use, and communication practices during the period.

Biographical/historical information

John T. Windley was a surveyor and businessman from the Pinetown, North Carolina area who worked with John L. Roper Lumber Company in Norfolk, Virginia, and lawyers Rodman and Rodman, Small and MacLean, and Ward and Grimes in Washington, DC.

Scope and arrangement

The John T. Windley Collection consists primarily of correspondence dating from 1905 to 1919, supplemented by a small number of oversize survey and printed materials dating from 1900 to 1919. The collection documents Windley's personal and professional activities in the early twentieth century through written communication and land-related records.

The correspondence forms the bulk of the collection and is organized chronologically by year. Each year is housed in a separate folder, with coverage spanning 1905 through 1912 and 1914 through 1919. The letters likely reflect routine personal, business, and regional matters, though content varies by correspondent and year.

A separate oversize grouping contains five items consisting of printed and manuscript materials. These include a confidential mercantile agency notification sheet issued by R. G. Dun and Company in 1906, as well as four plats documenting land ownership and drainage projects. The plats depict properties and tracts associated with individuals and locations including Beasley Farm, Credel Farm, Word Farm, areas near Fork Swamp, the Pantego Drainage District, and a tract at Pingo Swamp Road and H. G. Lilly Avenue. These materials provide additional context related to land use, surveying practices, and regional development during the period.
