The Stowe (Stough)–Myers Family Collection contains manuscript and photographic materials documenting the personal, social, and economic lives of two interconnected families from Concord, North Carolina, and related communities between approximately 1882 and 1985. The collection includes correspondence, postcards, original poetry, newspaper clippings, a cotton buyer's receipt, a report card, and photographic prints. Notable items include late nineteenth century letters addressed to Ruann Stowe, early twentieth century postcards exchanged among members of the Myers family, and materials reflecting local agricultural commerce and family commemorative practices.
Scope and arrangement
The Stowe (Stough) – Myers Family Collection consists of a small but varied body of manuscript and visual materials documenting aspects of family life, communication, and local economic activity associated with the Myers and Stowe (Stough) families of Concord, North Carolina, and related geographic connections extending to other parts of North Carolina, Illinois, and Florida. The materials date from approximately 1882 to 1985, with the bulk of the collection concentrated in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
The collection includes personal correspondence, postcards, poetry, newspaper clippings, financial records, and photographic materials. Together, these items provide insight into interpersonal relationships, literacy and expressive culture, and everyday life within interconnected family networks. The Myers family materials include manuscript poems, obituary and event clippings, a cotton receipt documenting agricultural commerce in the early twentieth century, and postcards exchanged among family members in 1911, some of which contain photographic images. The Stowe (Stough) family materials consist primarily of correspondence dating from the 1880s through the late twentieth century, including letters sent to Ruann Stowe in Concord, North Carolina, as well as a report card, postcards, and several unidentified photographic prints depicting individuals and domestic settings.
The collection is organized into two series reflecting family provenance: Series 1, Myers Family Materials, and Series 2, Stowe (Stough) Family Materials. Materials are arranged at the item level within a single box and folder, maintaining the intellectual distinction between family groupings while preserving the original order as received.
