WOVV 90.1 - Ocracoke Island Community Radio
WOVV 90.1 FM is a nonprofit, community operated radio station serving Ocracoke Island and surrounding areas. Licensed by the Federal Communications Commission in 2010, the station broadcasts as a low power FM outlet with a mission centered on locally produced programming. WOVV provides music, local news, public affairs content, and emergency information, with an emphasis on community participation and coverage of island specific concerns.
Peter Vankevich
Peter Vankevich is a broadcaster and writer associated with Ocracoke Island, North Carolina. Prior to relocating to Ocracoke, Vankevich worked for the United States Copyright Office at the Library of Congress, where he served for sixteen years as head of the Copyright Information Section. His work focused on public information services related to copyright law. Following his federal service, he undertook freelance writing and journalism, including work for regional publications in the Washington, D.C. area.
Vankevich and his wife Mary became permanent residents of Ocracoke Island in 2012. After moving to the island, he became involved with WOVV 90.1 FM, Ocracoke's nonprofit community radio station. At WOVV, Vankevich serves as host of the weekly radio program What's Happening on Ocracoke? The program focuses on local news and public affairs and features interviews and discussions with local officials, organization representatives, and community members. Topics addressed include town governance, public services, cultural events, and issues affecting daily life on Ocracoke Island. The program is broadcast on Friday mornings and is periodically rebroadcast or archived by the station.
