This collection consists of materials and documents (1918-1986) pertaining to the lives and military service of Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye, Sr. and his son, Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye, Jr. Most of the collection pertains to Macon J. Moye, Jr.'s military career (1937-1968), as well as his personal life and teaching career. Macon J. Moye, Jr.'s materials include official documents and correspondence from his career in the U.S. Army, personal correspondence with his wife, photographs, clippings, ephemera, and books and other published material relating to his career and life. Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s materials (1918-1966) consist of official documents, manuals, and correspondence from his service during WWI. His materials also include personal items, like contracts pertaining to his tobacco warehouse and clippings about his life and family.
Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye Jr. was born on May 10, 1920, in Winterville, North Carolina, and died on December 8, 1985. He married Virginia D. Epps (b. November 1, 1921 – d. April 10, 2015), a native of Sampson County, North Carolina. The couple had four children—two sons and two daughters.
Moye's military career spanned from 1937 to 1968 and included service in the North Carolina National Guard, the Army Air Corps during World War II (South Pacific theater), and the U.S. Army Reserves. He served primarily in the Artillery branch, with command roles during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Much of his time in the Reserves was spent on active duty, and his postings included assignments in Germany, Thule Air Base (Greenland), Fort Bragg (North Carolina), and various locations in South Carolina. During tobacco seasons, he occasionally worked in area warehouses, including his father's business, Planter's Warehouse in Farmville, N.C. He retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and received multiple commendations, including the Air Medal, Army Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal.
Following his military retirement in 1968, Moye returned to East Carolina University to complete his bachelor's degree. By 1970, he began teaching industrial arts at J.H. Rose High School in Greenville, North Carolina, and retired from the Greenville City Schools system on December 1, 1980.
This collection also contains material related to Macon Jasper Moye Sr., father of Macon J. Moye Jr. He was born on June 9, 1896, in Pitt County, North Carolina, and died on January 25, 1966. He married Myrtle Leona Nobles, and they had five children—three daughters and two sons. Moye Sr. served in World War I with Company J, 103rd Engineers in France, where he was wounded by mustard gas artillery fire, leading to chronic respiratory issues. He spent the majority of his career in the tobacco industry, operating warehouses in Greenville and Farmville, North Carolina. From 1948 to 1957, he co-managed Planter's Warehouse in Farmville in partnership with Chester Worthington, though he had been active in the business for approximately forty years.
This collection consists of two series: Series 1: Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye, Sr.'s Materials and Series 2: Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye, Jr.'s Materials. Each series is further divided into subseries based on material type and subject matter.

Subseries 1.1: World War I Materials (1918–1960, undated) includes documents related to Moye, Sr.'s service in World War I. Items include a telegram to his wife after he enlisted (1918), a certificate for passing regulations in the Twenty-Eighth Division (1918), a letter from the Adjutant General reporting that Macon J. Moye, Sr. was in the hospital and his condition (1918), an Individual Pay Record Book (1919), Honorable Discharge from The United States Army certificate (1919), a Certificate In Lieu of Lost or Destroyed one for his discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces (1960), and a "Manual for Soldiers in France" book (undated).
Subseries 1.2: Personal Materials (1913–1966, undated) contains personal and business-related documents such as photographs from Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s time at the Whitsett Institute (1913-1914), correspondence with the United States Veterans Bureau (1931), a newspaper article about Farmville's "Tabacco Market" including Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s Planter's Warehouse company (1953), a Lease Option Agreement for Planters Warehouse (1956), a legal Agreement for a business partnership between Macon J. Moye, Sr. and Chester Worthington (1956), a Contract between Macon J. Moye, Sr. and Chester Worthington (1957), Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s obituary from The News and Observer (1966), and two news clippings about the families house fire (undated).
Subseries 1.3: Family Histories (undated) contains photographs of Macon Glasgow Moye and Florence Leona Nobles Moye, who were Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s parents.
Subseries 1.4: Oversized Materials (1919, undated) contains a commemorative certificate titled "Columbia Gives to Her Son the Accolade of the New Chivalry of Humanity," issued in recognition of his World War I service (1919). It also contains a photograph (undated) of Simon Nobles (b. August 8, 1825 - d.July 14, 1891), who was Macon J. Moye, Sr.'s maternal grandfather.
Series 2: Macon Jasper "Jack" Moye, Jr.'s Materials is divided into seven subseries and documents his education, military career, correspondence, and personal interests.
Subseries 2.1: East Carolina Teachers College Materials (1940–1942, undated) includes clippings and ephemera related to Moye, Jr.'s time as a student, including coverage of ECTC's 1941 undefeated football season and various campus events (1940-1942, undated).
Subseries 2.2: Military and Education Career Materials (1938–1981, undated) documents his service in the U.S. Army and Army Air Forces, as well as his post-military education and career as a teacher. Materials include his high school transcript, personal histories, certificates, a Service Record for 1940-1943, Army Air Forces Diploma, and his last will and testament. It also contains Personnel, Special, Squadron, and General Orders; Individual Flight Records and Pilot Flight Log Book; Recommendation for Promotion of Officer forms; Installation Clearance Records; and documents about his military awards. Subseries 2.2 also includes documents and correspondence from his enrollment at East Carolina University after he retired from the military; the certificate for his initiation into the East Carolina University Beta Mu chapter of the International Honorary Professional Fraternity in Industrial Arts and Industrial Vocational Education at East; his certificate for public instruction in the state of North Carolina; and documents, awards, and correspondence of his teaching career in Industrial Arts at J.H. Rose High School. Subseries 2.2: Materials Pertaining to his Military and Education Careers (1938-1981) also include photographs from his careers (1940-1970). As well as Macon J. Moye, Jr. and Virginia "Jenny" Moye's authorization and membership cards, such as Virginia Moye's American National Red Cross card certifying her as an instructor in first aid to the injured, Macon J. Moye, Jr.'s various Officers' Open Mess membership cards, Operator Licenses, and Security Clearance authorization cards (1941-1977, undated). The miscellaneous material of Subseries 2.2 includes ephemera for his graduation from Roswell Army Flying School (1943), a clipping about Macon J. Moye, Jr. auctioneering tobacco (1949), his international driver's license from Germany (1964), other clippings of accomplishments in his career (1969, undated), and an illustration of a B-25 Bomber by Jerry Miller (undated). The final folder of Subseries 2.2 contains oversized certificates from his service in the Army and his time at the Thule Air Base in Greenland (1954-1958, undated).
Subseries 2.3: Personal Correspondence (1954–1967) primarily contains letters written by Moye, Jr. to his wife, Virginia "Jenny" Moye, while stationed away from home.
Subseries 2.4: Photographs (1940–1967, undated) includes images from his service in the National Guard and World War II (1940-1945, undated), military events(1952-1965, undated), photos from his service in the U.S. Army Reserves (1957-1962, undated), photos from his time at the Thule Air Base in Greenland (1955-1958, undated), and photos of Virginia "Jenny" Epps Moye (1938-1967, undated).

Subseries 2.6: Books and Published Materials (1941-1963, undated) includes "Warpath: A Story of the 345th Bombardment Group (M) in World War II" yearbook (1946), "113th Field Artillery: 30th Infantry Division" yearbook (1941), "37th Anniversary: 18th Field Artillery Group" magazine (1954), a Concentration Camp Dachau Memorial Cite Guide (undated), The Stars and Stripes "Kennedy Slain on Dallas Visit" newspaper (1963), and "The Kit Book: For Soldiers, Sailors and Marines" book (1944).
Subseries 2.7: Oversized Materials (1940-1944) consist of a Battery 'A' 113th Field Artillery, Fort Jackson, S.C. photograph (1940), a 72nd Squadron Santa Ana Army Air Base photograph (1942), and an AAF Cloth Map- Southwest Pacific Area Map 20 (Ambonia) and 21 (Halmahera) from 1944.
Subseries 2.8: Materials of Virginia "Jenny" Epps Moye (1963-2015) includes Virginia Moye's ceritificate from the American National Red Cross (1963), clippings about her service in the American National Red Cross (1967), a cerificate for her special memebership in United Methodist Women (1974), an advertisement for her antique shop (1976), and the clipping of her obituary (2015).
