This collection documents the history of the Bucklesberry farming community in Lenior County, North Carolina. The founding of the community and research on its early settlers, especially the John Sutton (ca.1720-1773) family, is also included. Research compiled by Joe P. Sutton.


Biographical/historical information

The Bucklesberry farming community in Lenoir County, North Carolina is among the oldest in the county. It was first settled by European immigrants in the early 1700s. By the end of the 18th century, the community was a part of the newly formed Craven County and was comprised of 92 individual land owners with the Herring family being the largest holder by acreage.


Scope and arrangement

The collection documents the origins of the Bucklesberry community in Lenoir County and its earliest settlers. Research regarding the name chosen for the community, the geographical boundaries of the area, the history of the first European settlers, and their motivations for immigrating to Bucklesberry is detailed. Most of the focus on the early settlers is devoted to the Sutton and Herring families with a detailed history of the life of John Sutton (ca.1720-1773) included. The history of John Sutton is supported by historical and genetic research with an in-depth look at his activities as a landowner and militiaman and his family history.
