This collection (March 12-27, 1863) includes three photographs of the 43rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers at Camp Rogers in New Bern, North Carolina and a letter from Union soldier John Buck to his wife Eve.


Scope and arrangement

This collection includes three 11" x 9" albumen photographs taken of the 43rd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers at Camp Rogers in New Bern, North Carolina, by Lieutenant G. H. Nickerson on March 12, 1863.

The first photograph is dated March 12, 1863 and is an image of the headquarters of the 43rd and includes Lt. Charles L. Holbrooks, Quartermaster Henry A. Turner, Lt. Col. John C. Whiton, Chaplain Jacob M. Manning, Surgeon A. Carter Webber, Adjutant James M. Whitney, and Major Everett Lane. The second photograph depicts the 43rd Regiment lined up with Camp Rogers in the background. The third image depicts the 43rd Regiment in square formation with the camp in the background.

Also included in the collection is a letter dated March 26th and 27th, 1863, written by Private John Buck to his wife Eve while Buck was stationed at Camp Rogers. Buck describes daily life and also mentions that the artist is present to take a view of the camp and regiment. Included is an envelope with the insignia of a tiger holding a flag with the number 43 on it. The 43rd Regiment was nicknamed the Tiger Regiment.
