Dr. Earl Trevathan Jr. was born September 29, 1923, to Ethel Turnage and Earl Trevathan. He hails from the town of Tarboro, North Carolina in Edgecombe County; and received his undergraduate degree at UNC-Chapel Hill and his M.D. from the University of Colorado. . Dr. Trevathan is noted to have become a member of the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS) in 1954. Known as a pediatrician in Greenville, North Carolina, Trevathan participated in creating East Carolina University's first medical school beginning in the early 1970s. Dr. Trevathan also served in the military during WWII. He used his knowledge of health care in eastern North Carolina for over fifty years and encompassed the history of medicine during East Carolina University's development.
