Collection contains ninety-six Civil War era cartes de visite. The vast majority of the images are of Union generals and leaders plus a few Union naval figures and political figures. All but six images have been identified; most identifications were not made contemperanously. Only five images are of Confederate figures.

This collection includes 10 cartes de visite of politicians, 61 cartes de visite of Union Naval Officers, 10 cartes de visite of lithographed union portraits, 6 cartes de visite of Confederate figures, 6 cartes de visite of other individuals, and 6 unidentified cartes de visite.

January 17, 2025 (unprocessed addition 1), 1 item; Carte de Visite (size 2" x 3 1/2") of John Newland Maffitt (1819-1886). The son of Irish immigrants, Maffitt was raised near Fayetteville, North Carolina, and served in the United States Navy from 1832 until the beginning of the United States Civil War. During the war, he served as an officer in the Confederate States Navy and commanded the CSS Florida, the ram CSS Albemarle, and the blockade runner CSS Owl. After the war, he settled in Wilmington, North Carolina. Purchase from Broadfoot Publishing Company.
