Autobiography of Joseph Greene Boyette's life from his childhood (born 1929) upbringing in eastern North Carolina until 1952 when he got out of the U.S. Navy and headed to Duke University to take classes. Boyette actually starts his memoir with some information on the extremely hard upbringing his mother (born 1903) had and also includes a section of notes that his mother wrote about the childhood experiences of her 3 boys.


Biographical/historical information

Joseph Greene Boyette was born in Colerain, North Carolina, on May 10, 1929. During his childhood his family frequently moved and he attended Pitt County and Rocky Mount schools. He served in the Medical Corp of the U.S. Navy from 1947 to 1952 which includes the Korean War era. After leaving military service, he attended Duke University, East Carolina College, and N.C. State University. He subsequently began teaching in 1957 in the Biology Department at East Carolina College and rose to be Dean of the Graduate School, and retired in 1989 as Associate Vice-Chancellor for Research.

He was married to Evelyn L. Boyette and they had children: Sally Boyette Cone, Josephine E. Boyette, and Lawrence J. Boyette. Joseph G. Boyette died on November 7, 2001.
