ECU's Joyner Library was awarded a 2020 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Community Connections grant through the State Library of North Carolina. The theme was "She Changed the World: North Carolina Women Breaking Barriers" in honor of the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th amendment. This award is for projects "that advance excellence and promote equity by strengthening capacity, expanding access, and community engagement in North Carolina's libraries."

Scope and arrangement

ECU Joyner Library Special Collections was awarded a 2020 LSTA Community Collections Grant. The years' theme was "She Changed the World: North Carolina Women Breaking Barriers" in honor of the anniversary of the 19th amendment.

The grant offered two online workshops: Discovering the Hidden Women in your Family with Dianne Richard and Telling Women's Stories: Memoir Writing Workshop with Ruth Moose. The grant also conducted oral histories and created a documentary, "She Changed the World: Women Breaking Barriers."

The videographer, Isiah Higgs, recorded five oral history interviews with local women leaders. Judge Wendy Hazelton who is currently serving as Pitt County's first female African American judge; Ann Wall, who is currently serving as Greenville, North Carolina's Town Manager; Edith Warren, who was Pitt County's first female principal and a state senator; Lauren Thorn, who is the Associate Dean of Students at East Carolina University; and Janice Lewis who is the Director of University Libraries at East Carolina University. These interviews and a short documentary piece created from interview snippets and b-roll footage will be added to Digital Collections.

Jennifer Daugherty, Alston Cobourn, and Patrick Cash were the interviewers.
