Greenville, North Carolina is the county seat of Pitt County. It was established in 1774 as Martinsborough after the last Royal Governor of the colony. It was later renamed to Greenesville in 1786 and over time the name was shortened to Greenville.
Greenville is situated on the Tar River and was a popular transportation hub for cotton and tobacco throughout the 1800s and well into the early 1900s. Tobacco processing and storage increased due to the arrival of the railroad and that brought more people into the town looking for work.
The college, East Carolina University, was established in 1907 as the East Carolina Teachers Training School. After a few years it became a four year college and eventually added the Brody School of Medicine in the 70s.
There are pictures within the collection of businesses and buildings that are no longer in operation or existence due to natural disasters, the Great Depression, and gentrification.
This collection contains 6 folders of photographs that show East Carolina University's campus, various business, and homes in Greenville, North Carolina ca. 1920.
