During the Civil War, the church was sometimes used as a shelter for Confederate soldiers and thus was burned by Federal soldiers in 1864. When the new church was built in its place, it was renamed the Black Jack Free Will Baptist Church. The church is considered by many as a focal point in the community for one hundred and seventy two years or more. Membership exceeds 600 members.
