Biographical/historical information

In 1854 the first missionary of the Disciples of Christ went to Africa. Alexander Cross was a part of the mission and went under the American Christian Missionary Society. In 1908 the work was taken over by the Christian Woman's Board of Missions, and in 1916 the CWBM teamed up with the Foreign Christian Missionary Society. All of the societies involved joined together in 1919 and became the United Christian Missionary Service. The photograph album documents the missionary life in Bolene, Congo Free State (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), at the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission. Families that were involved in the missions and are photographed are the Russell family, the Edwards family, the Poole family, and others.

This collection contains a single photograph album that documents missionary life in Bolenge, Congo Free State (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), at the Disciples of Christ Congo Mission in 1935 and 1936.
