This collection contains correspondence (August 1941-June 1942, undated) between Richard H. Owen and his parents, especially his mother Mrs. M. A. Owen in Miami, Florida, while he was serving aboard the USS Crescent City and stationed at the U.S. Naval Air Station at Corpus Christi, Texas. Also included is a notepad containing First Aid lessons and addresses.
Richard "Dick" Halloway Owen "Sailor Boy" served in the US Navy during WWII. He served aboard the USS Crescent City as a second class seaman and was stationed in the U.S. as well as other foreign countries. His mother, M. A. Owen, lived in Miami, Florida, during his correspondence.
This collection contains a series of letters between Richard H. Owen and his parents between August, 1941 and June, 1942, as well as some undated material. In addition to the letters, there is a notepad and a photocopied news clipping. The letters and additional material are organized into folders based on the date and their original organization. These letters contain Richard H. Owen's personal thoughts and experiences while stationed at various naval bases in the United States such as Corpus Christi, Texas, Charleston, South Carolina, and San Diego, California. He also was stationed in Panama Canal Zone.
Other letters in the collection were written by Wesley Grigg and G. H. Stowe. Wesley Grigg's letter discusses his experience in Haverhill, Massachusetts, and is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Owen. The letter is dated February 8th, 1942. There is no postmark date for the G. H. Stowe letter. The letter is addressed to M. A. Owen, and discusses his life on a farm.
Along with the letters, a photocopied news clipping consults the rubber shortage, and a notebook has notes pertaining to a First Aid lesson.
