Zachary Taylor Koonce III (1928-2015) of Washington, N.C., was a public-school system educator and administrator for over 20 years who wrote poetry and essays about eastern North Carolina. Included in this collection are published and unpublished poems and short stories (1974-1988, undated) by Mr. Koonce including publications containing poetry and local history articles, and clippings of a local history column he wrote titled "Tying Up" for the Beaufort-Hyde News (1987-1988).


Biographical/historical information

Zachary Taylor Koonce III was born September 29, 1928 and passed January 3, 2015 at the age of 86. He was married to Peggy Koonce and they had four sons, Zachary Taylor Koonce IV, Christopher Eric Koonce, Thaddeus 'Buddy' Boyd, and William Roger Mills-Koonce. Zachary ¬¬grew up on his family farm and after high school he joined the Navy. After the Navy he graduated from North Carolina State University and received a Bachelor's degree in industrial arts education and a Master's degree in counseling. He worked as an administrator and an educator in the public school system for over 20 years.


Scope and arrangement

The bulk of this collection are Zachary Koonce III's poems and short stories that were selected for publication. Poems include "The Shadow People" and "Gift of Love." A small portion of this collection are magazines and news articles that relate to Zachary Koonce and his writings.

Included in this collection are published and unpublished poems and short stories by Mr. Koonce including publications containing poetry and local history articles, clippings of a local history column he wrote titled "Tying Up" for the Beaufort-Hyde News (1987-1988), the "Narrowneck (N.C.) Letters" (1984), a series of poems titled "The Shadow People," and the "Gift of Love" poems (1974-1975) not selected to be included in a publication. Gift of Dr. Peggy Koonce.
