Biographical/historical information

The town of Winterville was incorporated on March 2, 1897. One of the town's founders was Amos Graves Cox who bought seventy five acres from Godfrey Mills and Arden Dawson. The Atlantic Coastline Railroad laid track near A.G.'s property and he moved his factory closer to the railroad. In 1906 the Bank of Winterville was organized and during the Depression it was one of the few banks in North Carolina to remain open. In 1920, the Cox Manufacturing Company began to sell electric to Winterville households and Winterville became the first town in Pitt County to have electric lights. The town of Winterville now offers a range of programs and activities. Residents can join the Winterville Chamber of Commerce which hosts Christmas socials and the Winterville Watermelon Festival.
